The topic of February’s meeting of the Denver OWASP group was wireless network security, the talk was presented by the engaging Keya Horiuchi, an engineer with AppliedTrust. The talk started out by covering wireless basics (different protocols and WLAN channels, focusing mainly on 2.4 and 5 GHz, “channel overlap,” interference, etc.) but quickly expanded to cover wardriving, “the infamous wifi Pineapple,” Kismet (& related MITM attacks), packet-sniffing and tuning the signal of your wireless router in order to minimize the distance that stray signal travels.
While some of Keya’s presentation covered well-trodden ground, it was entertaining to hear of her experiences with a wardriving contest. Her dissection of the wireless traffic was effective, & her discussion of related websites has given me a few new ideas to play with. All in all, it was well-worth the drive to Colorado Blvd. and I-25, and I’ll be looking to see what other topics Denver OWASP will be covering.
